Now Playing at YES Cinema
Directed by: Niki Caro
Genre: Biography, Drama, History
Cast: Jessica Chastain, Johan Heldenbergh, Daniel Bruhl
The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Zabinska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinska (Johan Heldenbergh of "The Broken Circle Breakdown"), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Germans, Jan and Antonina are stunned - and forced to report to the Reich's newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Bruhl of "Captain America: Civil War").
Niki Caro breaks out of the genre and emerges with a truly moving and original film. She uses the familiar structure of survival and rescue, but her focus is on the mechanics of cruelty itself in an unlikely setting.
Based on the bestselling non-fiction book by Diane Ackerman, the film is a poignant tale of survival. The Zookeeper's Wife conveys a tale of courage and opposition to authority that provides valuable inspiration for any era.
